Mandela Day 2026: How Mango5 Creates South African Youth Employment That Lasts

On July 18, as we celebrate another year of Nelson Mandela’s legacy, we remember his words to a group of students in 1990: “The youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow.”

More than three decades later, those words remain just as relevant. In a country where youth unemployment continues to be one of South Africa’s greatest challenges, creating opportunities for young people is about more than employment: it’s about building confidence, developing skills and creating a future.

At Mango5, this message resonates deeply. As a Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) company based in Cape Town, South Africa, we believe our work is not only about delivering world-class outsourced services but about creating opportunities that change lives.

How does Mango5 create jobs for South African youth?

Every day, we see the impact of employment in communities where young people are searching for meaningful work. By opening doors to careers in customer service and digital transformation, Mango5 empowers young people to grow and support their families. Today, 72.2% of our staff are under the age of 35, a generation building South Africa’s future.

We are part of something bigger. South Africa’s BPO sector employs more than 270,000 people and is projected to reach approximately 775,000 jobs by 2030, according to BPESA and Investec. Every new role created in our industry is a young South African stepping into a career, and much of that growth is built on an approach known as impact sourcing.

What is impact sourcing?

At the heart of this growth is an approach known as impact sourcing.

Impact sourcing means deliberately recruiting talent from communities where opportunity is scarce and investing in their growth. It is about creating meaningful employment while equipping people with the skills and experience to build careers.

For us, impact sourcing is more than a recruitment strategy. It reflects our belief that business can be a force for good, creating value not only for our clients but also for employees, their families and the communities they call home.

Honouring Mandela’s Legacy

Nelson Mandela Day encourages us to dedicate 67 minutes to making a difference in the lives of others. While this annual day of service is an important reminder of the impact we can have, we believe that creating opportunities shouldn’t be limited to a single day.

Throughout the year, Mango5 invests in people through meaningful employment, skills development, career progression and community initiatives that uplift those around us. Every opportunity created and every skill developed contributes to a ripple effect that extends far beyond the workplace.

By creating opportunities that empower young South Africans, we believe we are helping to honour Nelson Mandela’s legacy – not just for 67 minutes, but every day of the year.
